Godly Play Sunday School in Guild Hall

The use of Montessori’s approach to education has been adapted to Godly Play in order to stimulate children’s active participation in story and ritual and to awaken their creativity for the learning of the language, sacred stories, parables, liturgical action and silence of the Christian tradition. This is the most appropriate kind of language to cope with the existential limits to our being and knowing.

This combination of factors enables children (and adults) to become playfully orthodox. They become rooted in their own tradition and at the same time open to others, to new ideas and the future in creative ways.

Teens

Our Youth Minister, Daphne Corbett teaches our older group using a combination of materials from several churches and her own background as a religion grad from Macalester College. A new confirmation group gets underway in January 2010.

Adult Education in the Undercroft

Our 9:45 am program for adults is taught by our priest, Fr. Larry Crockett (Ph.D., University of Minnesota), who is past Director director of the Honors Program at Augsburg College. He has 20 years of experience teaching at the college level--all questions are fair game and honesty is highly valued. We average about 25 in our class each Sunday.

Each session features a handout you can take with you which summarizes what we are exploring. You can be very active or simply "test the waters" to see if this is for you. You can ask lots of questions or listen to see if this helps you learn the Bible and other issues related to Christian faith.

9:45-10:45 Sundays July 2010

Two Sundays, July 11 and 18, our Associate Priest, the Rev. Lisa Cressman, and her husband, Dr. Erik Cressman, will lead Adult Education on the topic of Medicine and Christianity. As most of you know, Erik is a research physician at the University of Minnesota in the area of oncology. And you likely know more about the multi-faceted Rev. Lisa! Gather in the Undercroft at 9:45 for great conversation, fellowship, and coffee/tea and treats.

Sun., July 25, the topic is "The Christian Creed: How in the World Can We Believe These Things?" The session will be led by our Youth Minister, Daphne Corbett. The class will explore some myths and facts about the Christian Creed and potentially cause us to rethink the words we say (or mumble) in church on Sunday. As usual, treats will be available.
