Adult Education for July 9:45-10:45 Sundays

Two Sundays, July 11 and 18, our Associate Priest, the Rev. Lisa Cressman, and her husband, Dr. Erik Cressman, will lead Adult Education on the topic of Medicine and Christianity. As most of you know, Erik is a research physician at the University of Minnesota in the area of oncology. And you likely know more about the multi-faceted Rev. Lisa! Gather in the Undercroft at 9:45 for great conversation, fellowship, and coffee/tea and treats.

Sun., July 25, the topic is "The Christian Creed: How in the World Can We Believe These Things?" The session will be led by our Youth Minister, Daphne Corbett. The class will explore some myths and facts about the Christian Creed and potentially cause us to rethink the words we say (or mumble) in church on Sunday. As usual, treats will be available.

Corn and Pig Roast/Silent Auction August 14

St. Mary's fabled August event begins at 4 pm and ends about 8. Admission is free, and all are welcome. The Corn Roast features roasted fresh corn, BBQ pork sandwiches, hotdogs and brats, beverages, and old-fashioned root beer floats--plus treats galore at our bake sale. This is a tradition that goes back about 12 years. Each year, about 500 people attend from around the valley.

The Sacred Harp singers will join us again this year. They bring us ShapeNote singing from the 19th century and use historic Guild Hall to take us back in time to a day when people had time for each other. In addition, we welcome to the stage this year the jazz/swing sounds of the EpiscoCats.

The Silent Auction will be housed in a large tent, with display tables holding items and descriptions of services on which people can bid. A minimum bid may be set, especially when the item is of high value. A bid sheet is located near the item, on which people may write their names and bids. This gives people a chance during the event to tour the tent and find the items most appealing to them. Bidding will begin at 4:00 and close at 6:30. A catalog of auction items will be available at church and online a few days before the event.

St. Mary’s Anticipates Sesquicentennial in 2013

The History Committee, under the able leadership of Michael Mackner, continues to discuss plans for raising awareness of St. Mary’s rich history, while planning for its 150th anniversary in 2013. The Vestry has authorized the Committee to proceed in seven specific areas: (1) Complete a written booklet on the history of St. Mary’s; (2) Create an archival framing of original documents, for display in the Undercroft or some similar place; (3) Record and update data on the St. Mary’s Cemetery; (4) Consider erecting a lich gate commemorating the 150th anniversary; (5) Consider an appropriate redesign of the front entrance of the church; (6) Repair the stained glass windows; and (7) Capture oral histories from within the church community (and beyond).

11:00 a.m. Services

Bluegrass Mass -- You are invited to join us the first Sunday of each month for a Bluegrass Mass at 11:00 a.m., preceded by a Potluck Brunch in Guild Hall at 9:45. Bluegrass is indigenous American music that is now appreciated around the world. The words are from the Book of Common Prayer, but all music is genuine bluegrass.

Celtic Mass -- Our Celtic Mass will be celebrated the fourth Sunday of each month. The liturgy includes prayers and music that date back centuries, including a Declaration of Faith found in "St. Patrick's Confession," believed to have been written in 450. The music (Welsh, Gaelic, Irish, etc.) and the instrumentation such as penny whistle and 12-string guitar provide a uniquely Celtic flavor to this new (but not-so-new) form of worship, and take us back to our Anglican roots back in Wales and Ireland.

Old-Tyme Gospel Service -- Please join us for an Old-Tyme Gospel Service any third Sunday of the month at 11:00 a.m. The liturgy is based on Rite II in the Book of Common Prayer, but the Old-Tyme flavor will be evident in a variety of gospel music culled from American experience, both north and south. A special six-voice choir provides full harmony. Be sure to bring your friends and neighbors!
